Your Boardroom Mirror

One of the most revealing questions for executive level leaders is:
“If the board saw your decision making process, not just your outcomes, what would they see?”
This is your boardroom mirror: an honest reflection of how you think, decide, and govern yourself behind closed doors.
Here’s a simple way to look in that mirror:
1. Pick one recent consequential decision.
2. Walk through these questions:
• “Who was involved, and who was left out?”
• “What data did I use, and what did I ignore?”
• “What emotions were named, and which were suppressed?”
• “What assumptions did I operate from?”
You’ll often see that your process is more revealing than your result.
1. Ask: “If I had to explain this process to a board, what would I be proud of, and what would I want to change?”
This is where governance and self leadership meet.
You’re not just leading your organization; you’re governing your own thinking.
Try this now:
• Write one thing you’re proud of in your latest decision making process.
• Then, write one thing you’d change if you could do it again.
You’re not just answering to shareholders; you’re accountable to your own clarity.
🏹 What’s one assumption you realize you operate from that you don’t often acknowledge? Share it - I’ll ask you one question about governing it differently.
